Missing INI and WCS files

Post by cmiller » 15 Jun 2019, 16:03

I am trying to integrate ASTAP into my photometric data capture program and I have the following questions:

1. After solving the image (testing from command line in Windows 10 Pro), I get the GUI window opened. Since I want to run unattended, I need to keep the GUI from opening.

2. After a successful plate solve, I don't get the INI or WCS files.

For testing, I put the G17 files, the .exe file and the .fit file into the same folder. I was expecting the INI and WCS files to be in the same location but don't see these files. The GUI shows the image was successfully solved.

Thanks!

Hello Charlie,

That is strange. The .exe file and G17 files should be in one directory. The image file could be anywhere. The .ini and .wcs should be created at the same location as the image.

I tested it again as follows:

c:\PROGRA~1\astap\astap.exe -f c:\temp\m13.fits

This results in a m13.ini file at c:\temp

The wcs is currently missing. Let me check.

The .ini is always produced. The .wcs is only produced if a solution is found.

You have to specify at least the -f parameter otherwise the program behaves like a viewer:
To solve:
c:\PROGRA~1\astap\astap.exe -f c:\temp\m13.fits

As a viewer:
c:\PROGRA~1\astap\astap.exe c:\temp\m13.fits

Ask me again if you can't get it working.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Using the -f option did produce the INI file instead of popping up the GUI. The plate solve was super fast.

Looks like a great solution for my plate solving needs.

Thanks for all your work and your generosity!

Good news.

Note that the command line is described here:
http://www.hnsky.org/astap.htm#astap_command_line

And for your information, ASTAP has also photometry capabilities.

Han:

I am not actually trying to do any photometry in my app -- just capture image data to be used later in photometric work.

I have integrated ASTAP into my image capture utility and it is solving frames quickly, most of the time. However, this image fails to solve:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/gwd1gv8tmlvwn ... e.fit?dl=0

If you could try to solve it and let me know if you can solve it and if you can't, any idea why not? If it is a matter of not enough stars, then that gives me guidance as to what kind of exposure times I may need to use to get a sufficient number of stars. I guess a good question would be what are the minimum number of stars needed to get a reliable solve?

The command line was: astap.exe -f C:\Capture\ASTAP\Image.fit -r 20 -z 1
