New native databases based on Gaia DR2

Post by han.k » 09 May 2018, 14:50

To all HNSKY users,

Three new star databases are released. They are based on the Gaia DR2 release from ESA. Are you a visual observer, you could download the G16. Astrophotographers could download the G17 and or G18. Or you just keep the old databases. They don't contain a real star designation (number) to keep them compact. For the G18, a new HNSKY version 4.0.0g is released to adapt the sliders in the object menu. Otherwise you will not see the faint stars. The magnitudes reported by these databases is a little fainter then in the U16. So the G17 contains about the same amount of stars then the U16. The G18 containing 208 million stars is double in size (802 MB RAR) compared with the U16 and the largest ever released for HNSKY.

G16:
Native HNSKY database up to Johnson V magnitude 16 containing 60 million stars. Magnitude is the calculated Johnson-V magnitude. This V magnitude is close to the visual magnitude but not the same. 455 bright Tycho2 stars are added for completeness. Unpack in the program directory, typically c:\program files\hnsky or for Linux /opt/hnsky. Recommended for visual observers.

G17:
Native HNSKY database up to photographic magnitude 17 containing 105 million stars. Magnitude is the unmodified Gaia BP. 455 bright Tycho2 stars are added for completeness. Unpack in the program directory, typically c:\program files\hnsky or for Linux /opt/hnsky. Recommended for astrophotographers.

G18
Native HNSKY database up to photographic magnitude 18 containing 208 million stars. Magnitude is the unmodified Gaia BP. 455 bright Tycho2 stars are added for completeness. Unpack in the program directory, typically c:\program files\hnsky or for Linux /opt/hnsky. Recommended for astrophotographers.

Clear skies, Han
