Star colors

Post by garyrmck » 10 Nov 2018, 22:46

Hi,

have just started using HNSky.

I have installed the G16 database so I can see star colors, however I would like to have star colors enable on the larger databases as with a ccd camera one can get down to deeper magnitudes. Is this possible? Have I missed a way of turning colors on in these?

cheers

Gary,

For colour in the G17 or G18, I have to run my conversion program. That's no problem. Yes maybe a good idea to make special versions. The database size will increase with 20% but that's not a problem. I will do that in a few weeks.

Thanks Han,

that would be terrific!

Will look forward to this happening. The database size is not an issue.

cheers and TIA

Gary,

I just finished the G17 in colour. Only the zip file is now available. Just extract the files in the program directory, for Windows c:\program files\hnsky For Linux it should go to /opt/hnsky You most likely have to extract the files first to an other directory and then move them to c:\program files\hnsky otherwise Win10 will protest.

Download 700 mbytes, 121 million stars:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hnsky/ ... databases/

The files have the same name as the mono G17. If you want to use both, just bulk rename one to 17G.....290

I also will make a G17-colour installation file and debian package. I don't think I will make a G18 colour. It becomes pretty massive. First see how this G17-colour performs.

I you have any problem, please tell.

Clear skies, Han

Hi Han. I downloaded the G17 color file and placed the g17_* files into my c:\program files\hnsky directory. Do i need to do something else to enable? I also have the tyc_* data files in the same directory. Not sure how to select between the two. Sorry for the basic question.

Hello Florian,

Not really. Select G17 and activate colours as show in the screen shot below.

Using the colour version, the program becomes a little more sluggish compared with the mono G17. I have thought of giving it an other name but decided to keep G17 name. So the mono and colour versions can't be together in the program directory unless you rename one.

My computer was twice 18 hours busy with creating this G17 colour. One time I had to restart due to wrong settings. For a G18 colour, I have to download more Gaia data and start earlier in the sorting process. This could take a week. So unless somebody has good arguments, I like to stick with a mono version of the G18.

Note the mono version contains the Gaia Blue magnitude. The colour version contains the Johnson-V magnitudes calculated. The Gaia blue covers the full visual spectrum while Johnson-V is more concentrated around green: https://www.astroforum.nl/filedata/fetc ... 1525206632
